Deployment, in this context, is referring to the installation of an operating system (i.e. Windows 7, Mac OS X) onto physical hardware (i.e. Dell Optiplex, Apple Mac mini). It is essentially the joining of hardware and software with the goal of creating a usable computer. While this may seem like a relatively minor task when deploying a single workstation, it becomes very time-consuming and cumbersome when attempting to deploy dozens, or hundreds, of workstations without a centralized deployment solution.

A centralized deployment solution utilizes an existing local area network (LAN) to deploy an operating system (OS) to a physical workstation. The OS that is installed on the physical workstation originates from what is referred to as an image. Due to the customizability and versatility of these images, along with the conveniences of LAN delivery, there are significant advantages in investing in such a solution.

Benefits of Centralized Deployment

The benefits of implementing a centralized deployment solution revolve around business continuity. It allows for rapid recovery of a crashed workstation and fast, consistent deployment of new workstations. With most modern deployment solutions, a workstation can be completely re-imaged in less than an hour. The newly installed OS will already have all necessary software packages and will be ready for immediate use. Furthermore, the OS will have already been licensed and activated by a central server. Essentially, a process that would have taken hours and required the dedicated attention of a technician has been streamlined to completion in under an hour with nothing more than the push of a button. This technology, combined with the intelligent use of a file server, allows the workstation to become expendable and mitigates the effects a failed workstation has on your bottom line.

Selecting the Right Deployment Solution

Selecting the best deployment solution is largely dependent upon your network environment. Sometimes multiple deployment solutions may be necessary as deployment solutions are almost exclusively OS specific. You also have the choice between products supplied by the OS manufacturer such as Microsoft Server 2008 R2 Windows Deployment Services (WDS) or third party tools like Symantec Ghost. While both of these products do an excellent job, WDS is probably easier on your bottom line. This is because WDS is included with a standard license of Windows Server. If your environment includes Apple computers, than the built-in deployment tools in Mac OS X Server are your best choice.

Virtual Server Deployment

Not only can these tools help you efficiently deploy workstations, they can also assist with the rapid deployment of new servers. Deployment of physical servers is very similar to workstation deployment because the technology is essentially the same. This is not true, however, of modern virtualization technology. Virtualization technology has revolutionized server infrastructure. Virtualization products such as VMWare vSphere ESX and VMware vSphere ESXi have very robust tools for deployment that allow for extremely rapid and efficient server creation. These tools can be used to create templates for commonly used server configurations. They also give you the capability of cloning an existing virtual machine if you need a server that serves a similar function. This process often takes minutes, instead of hours.
